An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and wounded a man at about 4 p.m. ET on Thursday in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City, according to the New York Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said a 5-year-old child was in the man's car, and that the child was physically unharmed.
DHS said ICE officers were conducting a "targeted enforcement operation" to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic. In its statement, DHS said, "an ICE officer discharged his weapon and the criminal illegal alien was injured," that officers rendered aid, and that the man is alive in a hospital. It said the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations were at the scene and the incident remains under investigation. DHS did not say what led to the shooting. It did not name the man.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man is 28 and was shot in the neck below his left ear, arriving at the hospital in stable condition. She said evidence indicates at least one ICE agent fired seven rounds, and that the windshield and back window of his Honda CR-V were damaged. NYPD surveillance video showed the man backing into a parking spot before a plainclothes federal officer approached the driver's door with a gun drawn; the car then drove out of view. The cameras did not capture the shooting itself. Tisch said an ICE sedan had front-end damage. The NYPD said it was not involved in the operation and responded afterward. She said officers found several men in varied attire, including some in masks and at least one with a long gun.
DHS said the man has a prior grand larceny conviction, multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession, and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. Tisch said he was arrested in New York in 2023 for robbery, pleading guilty to grand larceny, and in 2025 for criminal sale of a controlled substance, a case still pending. Authorities believe the child is the man's son; the NYPD located the child with a family member.
Mamdani said he spent about two hours on the phone with President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin trying to negotiate the man's release, without success, and that ICE then moved the man in an unmarked vehicle. He called the shooting an "outrage" and said ICE "must be abolished." DHS had not responded to Mamdani's remarks in the sources reviewed. Gov. Kathy Hochul said she spoke with Trump, expressed outrage, urged a halt to ICE operations in New York and asked that any body camera footage be released.
Protesters gathered at the scene chanting "ICE out." El País reported some confronted police, throwing bottles and moving barricades, and that House candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier was shoved. New York is among cities that limit police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Reuters reported federal immigration agents have shot at least 21 people since Trump returned to office, seven fatally; El País, citing The New York Times, said at least two dozen shootings and at least six deaths. Counts differ across outlets.
